The three route types explained
Each route type uses a different method for cross-border transit, which directly sets the speed ceiling and evening-peak stability. All three types are open to every plan — just pick by use case, with no premium routes locked behind a paywall.
IEPL Dedicated Line
IEPL (International Ethernet Private Line) connects the two ends of the cross-border segment point-to-point over the carrier's private network, so data travels on a dedicated channel the whole way and never mixes with public internet traffic. The cross-border segment is immune to public congestion, with the smallest speed drop during evening peak and the tightest control over packet loss and jitter. It is the most expensive of the three types, so 39VPN deploys it first in key regions such as Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Los Angeles, and London.
Relay Routes
Relay routes first connect through an entry server, then forward to the destination node over route-optimized international links. Compared with direct routes, the cross-border entry is path-optimized and usually avoids congested public routing; compared with IEPL, the cross-border segment still shares bandwidth with other traffic, so evening-peak performance sits between the two. Its moderate cost makes it the best value for everyday use.
Direct Routes
Direct routes connect straight from your local network to the destination server with no relay hop in between — the shortest path and the simplest setup. When network conditions are good, direct routes are no slower than the others; since the cross-border segment runs over the public internet, stability can fluctuate more at peak hours. These routes cost the least to maintain and often serve as backups.
Route recommendations by use case
No route is objectively better — it comes down to what you're doing. Here's the order to try for five common scenarios; most people land on a favorite within two or three attempts.
For mostly text and social media, bandwidth demands are low — a direct route or a nearby relay is plenty. Pick a geographically close region (Hong Kong or Japan, for example) for snappier page loads; data usage stays low, and the 60GB monthly plan covers most light use.
Check which region the content belongs to first, then pick a route in that region: US content via a US route, Hong Kong content via Hong Kong. Competitive games are most sensitive to latency and jitter: pick the geographically closest route (Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore) and go with IEPL to reduce variance. For logins, updates, and other non-gameplay traffic, any route works.
Video calls tolerate packet loss less than they need raw bandwidth, so keep one IEPL route fixed for meeting hours, and keep a relay in a different region on standby — if your main route wobbles, switch right away. Staying connected matters more than peak speed.
